Customer credit without the notebook

The Distiqo team · 30 September 2026

Almost every neighbourhood shop gives credit. The regular customer takes the month's atta and oil and pays when the salary comes. It builds loyalty — and it is also where a shop's cash quietly disappears, one page of the notebook at a time.

1. Every credit sale gets a name

A credit sale without a name is a gift. Before you hand over goods on credit, the bill should say who owes it: the name, and a phone number you can reach. “Sharma ji, B-block” is not enough when there are three Sharmas in B-block.

2. Record part-payments and advances the same day

Customers rarely pay the exact amount. Someone gives ₹500 against ₹1,340; someone else leaves ₹2,000 in advance for next week. If these live in your memory, the balance is wrong by the weekend. Write them against the customer the moment the money comes in, and the balance takes care of itself.

3. Look at how old the money is, not just how much

₹3,000 owed for a week and ₹3,000 owed for three months are different problems. Sort your credit customers by the oldest unpaid bill. Anything over a month deserves a word; anything over two months deserves a pause on new credit.

4. Remind politely, with the amount

A reminder that names the amount and the date works better than a hint at the counter:

“Namaste Gupta ji, ₹2,340 baaki hai 10 August se. Jab suvidha ho, bhej dijiye. — Shree Balaji Store”

Send it from your own number, the one the customer already knows. It reads as a neighbour asking, not as a notice.

5. Decide a limit per customer

Not a rule for everyone — a number for each regular, based on how they pay. A family that always settles on the 5th can carry more than someone who has promised three times.

How Distiqo helps

In the Retailer OS, a credit sale needs a named customer — the counter won't put credit on a walk-in. Part-payments and advances post against the customer the moment you take them, and an advance is used up automatically on their next bill if you choose. The Customer Credit page lists who owes what, oldest first, and one tap prepares a WhatsApp reminder from your own number with the amount filled in; you check it and send it.
